I'm a fan of setting NODEENV explicitly every time you run the app, as in the second example (NODEENV=production node app.js). That way you potentially save yourself from some future hair-pulling in the event that you forget to set your local NODEENV back to. It is likely you do not have the permissions to access this file as the current user npm ERR! If you believe this might be a permissions issue, please double-check the npm ERR! Permissions of the file and its containing directories, or try running npm ERR! The command again as root/Administrator (though this is not recommended). Installation on Windows and Mac OS is simple, as you just have to download and run the appropriate installer and follow the familiar instructions. If you have brew on your Mac, you can also install Node.js with brew install node. In both cases, Node Package Manager (NPM) will be used to install other packages along with Node.js.

Quit current app. You can use Command + Option + Shift + Escape to force the currently active app to quit, just hold the sequence down for a few seconds. Control-Option-click (Ctrl-Alt-Click) an app icon on the Dock and you should see the Force Quit option appear, tap it to Force Quit the app. If you encounter an unresponsive app on your Mac, you have four methods at your disposal to close it using Force Quit. For an app whose icon you have parked in the Dock, you can right-click.
